Load securing of products on pallets is stricter

New Eumos legislation sets higher requirements

Cargo security is an urgent matter for manufacturers. Accidents occur every day due to sliding or dropped loads, or even worse, due to overturning trucks. The result is a dangerous work situation, damage to image and high economic costs.

What does this mean to you?
As a shipper, until May 2018 you were obliged to secure and secure your cargo under clause 22 STVO in such a way that it could not fall over, fall off or slip away. Not even during an emergency stop or a sudden evasive movement. The emphasis is different with the new EUMOS standard 40509. The aim is to maximize cargo security in the most efficient way possible. It makes shippers and packers responsible for the way in which the pallet load is carried out in a stable manner and secured. According to the new legal standard, the cargo provider is obliged to offer loading units in a stable manner and, if necessary, to provide evidence of this stability. It gives the tertiary packaging of a pallet a completely new status.

What is the purpose of the new EUMOS directive?
The new EUMOS legislation was introduced in May 2018, which imposes significantly higher requirements on transport on pallets within the EU. In addition, liability for damage shifts from the carrier to the client. The European EMOS 40509 directive should improve road safety. The EUMOS legislation forces manufacturers, transporters and their customers to look more closely at the safety of the transport of products on pallets. The new legislation imposes strict requirements on the forces that the load must be able to withstand and attaches high fines to violations. EUMOS pays close attention to pallet stabilization and forms the basis for technical supervision of road traffic and includes principles and testing standards, such as truck load checks, and how to carry them out. EUMOS is supported by the European Parliament.

How do you test flexible transport packaging?
The new European directive prescribes an EUMOS 40509 test. A test object may not exceed a certain slope even after repeated braking loads. Carrying out such research is only possible with a special technical application that reproducibly simulates the required horizontal loads. Tallpack has developed the Stretch Film Test Module for this purpose.

How can Tallpack help you?
The Tallpack Stretch Film Test Module provides insight into the actual added value of stretch film on the stability of the pallet. We substantiate this with a clearly readable measurement value. The Test Module translates a gut feeling into scientific results. This makes it the perfect method to compare the stability of different pallet packaging in an extremely reliable manner. You will see which film from the Tallstretch range is most suitable for your load. The measurement results are recorded in your pallet stability passport. This means you run significantly less risk of transport damage and risks are significantly better covered.

Even more security ?
Customers looking for greater stability can also have tests performed at accredited technology centers. The Tallpack International Technology Center is one of them. Here we can realistically simulate the required acceleration values on a “horizontal impact car”. We test your pallets for stability in a practice-oriented manner. You have even more guarantee that your pallet loads meet the required guidelines.

How does Tallpack continue to guarantee stability?
The Tallpack Stretch Film Test Module initially gives you insight into the most optimal ratio between material consumption, stability and the lowest costs per packaged pallet. In this way you immediately save and make your pallet load securing more sustainable and you prevent negative inspections. After the tests, we continue to guarantee stability by carrying out periodic quality measurements at your location. Knowing more? Our account managers are happy to tell you about it.
